One of the activities deployed by the Disease Surveillance Officers in 2022 sentinel surveillance is ovitrapping. 100 ovitraps were set in each of the communities, these consist of 5 ovitraps per house. Ovitraps are set with containers filled with water and placed in ideal places where female mosquitoes could oviposit in them. The traps are allowed to sit for 72 hours before retrieval. On retrieval, the containers are inspected for ribbons that are positive with mosquito eggs. The ovitraps targets the immature stages of domestic and peridomestic container breeders notable among which are Ae. aegypti: the primary vectors of yellow fever and Ae. albopictus.

Ovitrapping will help to determine the vectors density; while the eggs collected will be hatched and reared to adult stage for phenotypic and genotypic resistant determination.
